A scholarship for Antonio, student of the Pininfarina di Moncalieri institute who, after creating an alternative and abusive low-cost market selling snacks to his friends, ended up blamed by no matter who.

The day the School will deliberate on his suspension, the Luigi Einaudi Foundation offered him a scholarship supporting his entrepreneurial spirit. «His behaviour is to be followed, not blamed», President Giuseppe Benedetto explains as to stressing how the student’s initiative is actually in line with the liberal ideas embodied in the Foundation.

The young man has been invited yesterday and, together with his father, has cheerfully welcomed the scholarship: «His initiative struck us, in my opinion his action looks like a real business plan – said the President – Maybe he still did not read Luigi Einaudi o Friedrich von Hayek, but I’m persuaded that his initiative is not to be punished». In the past few weeks, a lot of initiatives supporting Antonio came up (Antonio is a fictional name, considering the young man is a minor), as he received job offers as well.

Others criticized his actions, inviting him to respect the law: «I don’t really think his activity is illicit, I heard people talk about black market too, but to me this is not the point, in this affair – continues Benedetto – Let’s hope he will be given the chance to realize his dreams and that he will be able to enhance his natural inclinations. I think his is a true entrepreneurial talent».

The President: “His behaviour is to be followed, not blamed”

The institute’s Principal, Stefano Fava, will participate today to a meeting where the class council will deliberate if suspending the young man, or less. In the past weeks he proposed an alternative solution: including him in an entrepreneurial project: «Teachers have full autonomy, and they will deliberate according to what it the best solution for his future, and for education’s sake». Concerning the scholarship, the Principal remains neutral: «We are waiting as to evaluate the details of this idea – he says – to us, the most important goal to pursue is the boy’s well-being».

The snack’s seller should arrive in Rome, with his father, in a couple weeks. The details of the scholarship have not been defined yet: «Ours is a symbolic action to support his entrepreneurial attitude, and as to help the boy also on a job-seeking perspective. It could represent a little economic support for his studies, or also to start his own activity. If later on he will need to learn how to start companies, we have few courses here in Rome, and he will be welcome».

Despite recently recovered from a cold, the journalist and anchor-man did not disappoint an enthusiastic audience. With his usual clarity and energy characterizing him on TV and in his books, Porro explained how important a liberal culture is in a Country and in a continent where socialism, bureaucracy and dirigisme gained the upper hand, becoming a dominant thinking.

Non only past and present, Porro spoke about the future as well. After economic and civil revolutions, it will be paramount to deal as well with the new digital revolution, that may potentially strongly compress and compromise liberties.

Earlier, Giuseppe Benedetto highlighted the merits of the book, to the point of proposing it as the introductive text for the School of Liberalism. Sole disappointment, the absence of an historical figure such as Giovanni Malagodi, as Porro itself said.

Also, a vibrant debate followed. Davide Giacalone explained his idea about the issue of the new digital and global challenges with a brilliant speech, while the audience asked the journalist his opinion about different topics such as the environment, Pope Francis and Fidel Castro.

At the end of the presentation, Porro signed dedication copies and stayed in for photo-shootings. A special evening the audience will not easily forget.

Perfectly suited in his “buzzkill” role as a liberal, Benedetto, fed the debate highlighting strengths and weaknesses of the Tuscany region’s President manifesto. One above all, the issue of careers-mingling, surely one of the greatest anomalies of our Country, as stressed by Benedetto.

Economic losses and mismanagement brought Atac and Ama in authentic public burdens, relegating Rome at the bottom of European lists for cities with the best quality of life.

Rome is far from representing that prototype of Smart City that other European cities are progressively enhancing: the city lacks a serious planification and, most of all, it lacks data managements unbounded by international operators

It is essential to rethink the concept of public mobility and transportation borne wholly by the taxpayers. The model is undoubtedly represented by the market competition: this is the only way to prevent the Municipality of Rome from ‘bringing books to courts’.

YES: 47.4% (9.026 Votes);

NO: 49% (9.339 Votes);

NOT SURE: 3.6% (78 Votes).

More than 19.000 voters.

NO wins, but with a negligible gap (313 votes).

It is likely, as highlighted by several analysts recently, that the outcome of the referendum will be decided by those being yet unsure. O maybe not. Maybe all is written, already. We will know it in few days.

The Foundation decided not to take a side, also as a sign of respect towards its affiliates currently militating for other parties, but LEF still actively participated to the debate, somehow even sponsoring it.

We are persuaded that December 4^th – the voting day – will not be the end of the world.

In the meanwhile, as anticipated, the survey’s analytic data will be disclosed and commented by the LEF executives.

An example? The 2008 financial crisis. “Clearly, the crisis was a result of industrial policies”. Debenedetti observed. “Choosing to give a house to live in, to people without salaries nor economic warranties, after all, is the product of a US Law under the Clinton presidency. If a bank refused to accord loans to those lacking salaries or warranties, the bank was not entitled to open new branches and locals. In short, behind 2008 housing bubble there has been a specific political decision.”

Debenedetti kept on delivering his j’accuse to the State arguing the concept of “general interest” itself. Who decides ‘which’ interest, and most of all, what is it?

The State and the political world are not the only defendants. Huge responsibility for the economic, financial and moral crisis of the past year is to be ascribed to the Italian capitalism, long-lost relative of the one building our Country in the aftermath of World-War II.

A system replacing reliable data and statistics with simple algorithms, foregoing investment with the excuse of pursuing the present. “Statistics – said Debendetti – are similar to algorithms, just as ‘big numbers’ are similar do big data, they simply are not similar.”
