]]> Some states are absolutely determined to avoid becoming the next victims of Russian aggression. They are certain that reactivating NATO policy is the only way to avoid a future of instability. This event is of great geopolitical and European defense and security importance. The outbreak of the Russian-Ukrainian war has accelerated processes that were already partially underway. The crisis crescent and the policies of the European Union and NATO will be at the center of the European political debate in the coming years. The Russian-Ukrainian war has reignited a historical, cultural and political sentiment felt by those states that were affected by the Russian Empire and then by the seventy years of the Soviet era. The forthcoming publication of Towards a New Iron Curtain will provide the starting point for a discussion of this important topic.

]]> The European Liberal Forum, supported by the Project: Poland Foundation, has taken on the crucial task of dissecting and explaining the extent of Russia’s influence across Europe. The initiative brings together twenty experts and editors from across the continent to articulate how Russian dictator Vladimir Putin’s actions and ideologies affect everyday Europeans’ lives. This exploration is not just a narrative of external geopolitical manoeuvres; it delves into the internal dynamics of European countries, highlighting how Putin’s reach has infiltrated various sectors, including the economy, politics, media, and social organizations.

The study describes universal phenomena and trends. Even when the starting point for describing a problem is a single country or a group of countries, it does not at all mean that this problem is limited to this particular geographical area. On the contrary, it should be assumed that it is or will be present in one form or another in other countries as well. The question is: when and with what intensity? Because there are no places in Europe in which Putin would not be interested. Destabilising or subjugating every patch, even small or remote from Moscow, brings the dictator closer to his goal: reconstructing the empire, building Putin’s Europe.

During the discussion, authors of the publication will answer questions what has changed in recent months and how whether there will be more or less of Putin’s Europe after the upcoming EP elections.

Before you all go on Christmas holidays, we are back with our next opportunity in 2024!

It is time for our first LYMEC Digital Assembly of 2024. This event (already our #8 Digital Assembly) will take place online on Saturday, 3rd February 2024 between 10:30-13:00 CET (Brussels time). This event is supported by the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom (FNF) – European Dialogue.

In our constant efforts to increase the amount of opportunities to meet the current leadership and to discuss together the main issues we are facing today in Europe.

The agenda will be as follows:

PART A – The topic of the event will be focusing on LGBTQIA+ rights, as LYMEC recently adopted a resolution on the current worrying developments on the matter in Italy. The proposal is calling upon EU Member States and representatives to maintain pressure on Italy to back down from these latest queerphobic policies, respect civil liberties and political rights for the LGBTQ+ community. We would like to therefore open the discussion around this pressing issue in Italy and see with a set of local speakers and experts how the European community can support the Italian LGBTQ+ community to face the new realities. It is very important for us young liberals to be vocal and at the forefront of the fight for the rule of law and civil liberties all over in Europe.  The draft programme with the list of speakers will be circulated to the registered participants. We will be coordinating with our partner organisations in Italy for this event and especially the Fondazione Luigi Einaudi.

PART B – It will be dedicated to the Bureau presenting what has been done so far since the Autumn Congress (in Riga last November) and what the plans and actions for the coming months are, especially in light of the European Elections in 2024 and the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine. This will be primarily an opportunity for delegations to ask questions and share their concerns/comments with the current leadership. Questions or comments for Part B can be sent to office@lymec.eu and bureau@lymec.eu anytime ahead of the event or you can simply ask for the floor during the event.

Schedule:

The meeting will start at 10 h 30 CET (Rome time) and end around 13 h 00 CET.
The event will take place fully online on Zoom conferencing platform. The link will be sent to registered participants the days before the event.

About the event

The current invasion of Ukraine by Russia is not a local war but Putin’s battle against the liberal West. It is his act of brutal opposition against the ideas like freedom, human rights and European integration. Kremlin has been working for a long time to undermine liberal values in Europe, and it used different methods to promote its ideological and political agenda. The long-term objective of Russian influence activities is to weaken NATO and the EU, and without understanding how Kremlin works, what harm has been done already and what can be done to prevent it, European societies will vulnerable towards future Russian attacks and European Union will be forced to use enormous recourses to repair all damages.

The main objective of the ‘Putin’s Europe’ project is to improve understanding of how Russia is conducting political influence activities against Europe and how liberals, on both European level and Member States’ level, can defend themselves from this influence. During the event 12 authors will discuss the topic of Russian influence in European democracy.

One of the key pillars of the energy policy of the European Commission is to put citizens at the centre of energy transition. Citizens should become an active part of the decarbonisation process by adopting, e.g., self-consumption or selling renewable electricity and flexibility services to the market.

Renewable Energy Communities (RECs) are one of the models envisaged by the EU legislation to promote such active role of citizens and achieve ambitious decarbonisation targets. The project aims at investigating the legislative framework of different EU Member States ( Portugal, Germany, Italy, Bulgaria and Denmark) to achieve an understanding of the state of the art of national legislation in promoting RECs.

The event consists in a workshop aimed at presenting to participants the goals and the methodological approach of the research and the structure of the final publication presenting the results of the study. To this aim, following the introduction of Francesco Cappelletti (European Liberal ForumProject Officer) and Renata Gravina (Luigi Einaudi Foundation European projects coordinator) Simona Benedettini (Luigi Einaudi Foundation RECs project leader) will provide

  • aims of the research
  • relevance of the research for Europe and the EU debate on climate and energy policies;
  • methodological framework of the research (areas of investigation, specific issues to be addressed for each area);
  • contents and structure of the final publication
  • next steps of the project;

]]> Context

The recent REPowerEU Plan of the European Commission considers Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) a key driver to achieve the new 2030 target of 45% share of renewable energy. According to the European Commission, such target is essential to ensure the timely and effective achievement of carbon neutrality in 2050. However, the diffusion of PPAs is facing several challenges across EU Member States due to both market and legislative barriers which are intrinsic to the long-term nature of PPAs. The project intends investigating the legislative and market framework for PPAs in different EU Member States (a preliminary and not conclusive list of countries might include Italy, Hungary, Germany, Spain, Portugal) to identify best practices for the diffusion of PPAs and to contribute to the EU debate on climate policies.

The theme of PPAs communities addresses issues common to the liberal political and ideological area many issues dear to the liberal area, from combating legislative and market barriers through a transnational and supra-national perspective to ecological challenges and economic savings.

About the event

The event consists in a workshop conceived as a follow up to discuss Power Purchase on a comparative frame and agree on a final publication. Simona Benedetttini (LEF project leader) will animate the workshop to explain to them how she conceived the project and to assist them in the realisation of a cohesive in-depth chapters on a European perspective. Benedettini will help authors reflecting on several issues such as:

  • Identifying policies and market interventions which proved to be effective in promoting PPAs in EU countries
  • Achieving an in-depth understanding on relevant barriers to the diffusion of PPAs
  • Promoting the dissemination of best practices for the diffusion of PPAs
  • Providing a relevant contribution to the EU debate on climate and energy policies

Associazione Copernicani together with Re-Imagine Europa and Fondazione Luigi Einaudi, promotes the event held under the umbrella of the European Commission, Unesco, SDSN, Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This second edition will continue to investigate how digital technologies exploited for political purposes can positively affect electoral process and strengthen democratic institutions with two additional perspectives: the algorithmic power of eGovernment and online disinformation.
